Discover Principe Island with Bom Bom Island

There are hotels that have an unusual spirit, a secret beauty and an inimitable charm.

The Bom Bom Islandco-lodge Bom Bom Island Resort located in the north of Principe Island is an address that is unlike any other and surprises the traveller. In the heart of the Gulf of Guinea, this volcanic island invites you to take your time, here the sun diffuses a constant heat, pleasantly mitigated by the fresh sea breeze.

The Resort

Bom Bom Island Resort is set in a lush setting, surrounded by tropical vegetation. The foliage of the palm trees and the dazzling blooms attract the eye and create a special atmosphere. Such isolation in the heart of this pristine island creates a surprise effect and encourages discovery.

The 19 bungalows of the lodge offer a unique and authentic experience, in the gardens, by the pool or by the sea. The bar and restaurant of the Bom Bom Resort are located on the islet of Bom Bom, and are accessed via a 230-metre long wooden pontoon. The cuisine is a virtuous encounter between fresh products and local specialities. The chef composes a menu of envy in his own way, where his vision of gastronomy joins Principe's "Leve Leve" philosophy of using local products.

Principe, a little-known African treasure

Principe, an ancient volcanic island, is one of the two islands of the Sao Tome & Principe archipelago. It is located 300 km off the coast of Gabon . Principe is an Eden that is still unknown to the general public, with crystal-clear waters on the white and black sand of the coconut tree-lined beaches.

It is a natural paradise with a great diversity of ecosystems that are home to many species of fauna and flora. Porcelain roses, bright red hibiscus, giant orchids and begonias are spread throughout the primary forest. This blooming is due to the warm and humid climate from December to March in the high season. This is the perfect time for those who want to spend Christmas in the sun or a change from a ski holiday. From June to September the rains return sporadically but the temperatures remain mild.

The island is also an eldorado for sea turtles , which breed and nest between December and March.

Humpback whales come to the waters of Bom Bom from July to December and make it a unique experience for visitors to the lodge.

For both experienced and novice big game fishermen, they will be enchanted by the diversity of Principe's seabed. This is an opportunity to fish for the Blue Marlin which can reach a length of 5 metres in these Atlantic waters. A solitary swimmer, often confused with its cousin the swordfish, it is most likely to be encountered from May to August.

A former colony, the population of Principe is a rich mixture of the African continent and Portugal. The inhabitants are warm, smiling and invite to discover the secrets of their culture. Here you can discover the heritage against the background of "Dexa" traditional and rhythmic music.

Cocoa is one of the jewels of this Creole heritage, nicknamed "Chocolate Island".

Principe was the first land where cocoa trees were planted in Brazil. Today, the island's growers still produce cocoa with rich and unique aromas.

HBD ambassador for eco-tourism

In 2011, HBD, a company founded by Mark Shuttleworth, acquired the Bom Bom eco-lodge. Solidarity and sharing are the key words of HBD's culture, and the company's mission is to combine tourism and sustainability. Guests at Bom Bom are made aware of the need to protect this natural ecosystem and to build relationships with the islanders. HBD is a loyal ambassador of Principe and has projects to develop certain infrastructures on the island while protecting it. Among its latest missions, the company is currently building an airport on the island.

HBD also collected over 220,000 plastic bottles and installed 13 water purification fountains to ensure that local people have access to clean water. To pay tribute to Principe and further demonstrate its commitment, HBD has unveiled a video to raise awareness of the island:
