The Plum, all the flavours of summer in one fruit

The different plum varieties are harvested throughout the summer, Press release, Monday 17 July 2017 The plum is the gourmet, wellness and colourful partner of the summer period

This year, thanks to generous sunshine and friendly rain, the harvest arrives a week early. This magical combination promises a selection of juicy, colourful, plump and irresistibly sweet plums.

For many, biting into a plum brings back fond memories of an August breakfast under the plane trees and the smell of toasted bread with plum jam...

It is this one that opens the ball with the beginning of the harvest around 20 July!

Each plum has its own particular qualities, they differ in taste, texture and colour, one is sweeter, another more acidic, another more melting. They are delicious in pies, surprising in a savoury dish, but just as irresistible when eaten all day long! With their fine, crunchy skin that doesn't need to be peeled, plums can be taken anywhere, they are the fresh reflex of summer. Red, green, blue or yellow, this fruit is perfect for breakfast, but also for a picnic, a game of pétanque with friends, a day at the beach or even on the road!

As well as being delicious, it is ideal for keeping fit and slim. Plums are perfect for a slimming diet. It is 92% water, hydrates the body and helps eliminate toxins thanks to its high potassium and sodium content. Its high fibre content helps the digestive system to function properly. The plum provides numerous vitamins A, B, C and E which help to keep fit. It is very rich in magnesium, iron and potassium, a mineral that limits blood pressure.

The plum parades on the summer markets with its pretty blue, red, yellow or green hues.

But how to choose the right plum? To the touch, the fruit should be soft, but not mushy. The skin is smooth and gives off a good scent. A small white veil can be found on some plums, this is the pruin: small wax flakes that the fruit produces naturally to protect itself from the heat. Its presence is a guarantee of freshness. Plums can be kept for about ten days in the refrigerator (depending on their maturity) but it is recommended to take them out of the crisper a few days before eating them to release their flavours. To keep a bit of summer sunshine in the heart of winter, it is possible to freeze the plum after having pitted it.
